Category:

A beautiful walk around a glacial Lake, surrounded by horseshoe shaped mountains, with expansive views over Bantry Bay, and later looking down into surrounding valleys.

We drive from the meeting point down into the Glengarriff river Valley where we park our cars well below Barley Lake and can enjoy some quant local houses on the way up the narrow road. Above we pass by old turf cuttings before we follow the Barley Lake around to our left. On the far side of the Lake we ascend the Crossterry Mountain side and can look into the Kerry river valley, and see the whole Caha mountain range around us. After the lunch break we descend slowly around the Lake with views over Glengarriff and Bantry Bay, where Wolfe Tone with the French navy tried to land in 1796. After the walk we can have tea and scones at Molly Gallivan’s, where you can visit a local history exhibition and Poteen still.
