Caherdaniel, Derrynane

Staigue Fort, Old Butter Road, Panoramic views of Kenmare Bay, Derrynane Bay and Islands. Ruins of Kilcrohane Coad Church and famine Graveyard. Derrynane Beach seaweed explanation, Tide permitting Ancient Abbey of Saint Finian on Abbey Island.

Our day begins with a visit to Staigue Fort, an impressive stone fort monument dating 600 B.C. at the head of the river valley in the town land of Castlecove, then we join the local old butter road, a track used to transport butter form the local farms to the cork butter exchange in Cork where it was traded to be exported all over the world. We pass the ruins of Kilrohane and Coad Graveyard, with its many stone markers of famine graves. As we travel along this track it opens out giving beautiful views of Kenmare bay, Derrynane Bay and the Islands in the bay. On reaching Caherdaniel there is an opportunity to have some local Refreshments. We continue on then to Derrynane beach where we can see and learn of the many varieties of seaweed which can be gathered for use in everyday cooking. Finishing with a visit to the Ancient Abbey of Saint Finian’s tide permitting with the grave of Daniel O’Connell’s wife. A short walk to Derrynane House and Gardens which was the home of Daniel O’Connell, now our smallest National park. Here you can kick off your boots and enjoy a welcome cup of tea at the Café.

The sightseeing and activities were better than we even thought! I still can’t believe we did so much in such a short time, but we did not feel stressed. We really loved the tour and would do it all over again in a minute! Thanks.
